The quick answer
To play Throneward with friends, open Multiplayer → Private, choose 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 or 4v4, then use Copy invite link. Friends who open the link are taken to that lobby after signing in. Arrange the two teams, choose legions, fill unused seats with bots and have every human press Ready up. The unranked match starts automatically when all seats are full and every human is ready.
What everyone needs
- A browserThroneward runs directly on the web. Your group does not need to install a separate client.
- An accountEvery human player must register or log in before joining an online lobby.
- One hostThe person creating the private game chooses its size, shares the invitation and controls bot seats.
- A complete rosterA private match needs 2, 4, 6 or 8 occupied seats. Bots can fill any places your group does not use.
1. Create the private lobby
- Open Throneward and select Multiplayer from the main menu.
- Register or log in. After authentication, the multiplayer home shows Ranked, Casual and Private.
- Select Private. This opens separate options to create a lobby or join an existing one.
- Choose the size. Pick 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 or 4v4. The number describes players per team, so a 3v3 lobby has six total seats.
1v1
2 seats total. Best for a direct duel or one player against a bot.
2v2
4 seats total. A compact team match for two to four friends.
Easy group starting point3v3
6 seats total. More allied coverage and more lanes feeding each shared King.
4v4
8 seats total. The largest private format, with four independent boards per side.
The size is fixed when the lobby is created. If the group wants a different format, leave and create a new lobby with the correct number of seats.
2. Invite friends by link or code
The simplest option is Copy invite link. Send that URL through your normal group chat. If a friend is not signed in, Throneward first asks them to log in and then continues into the invited lobby automatically.
You can also share only the six-character code. Your friend opens Multiplayer → Private, enters it in Join a lobby and presses Join. Codes are case-insensitive when entered, but they only work while that lobby still exists.
3. Arrange teams, legions and bots
The lobby shows Team 1 and Team 2 as separate columns. A player changes sides by clicking an empty seat on the other team. Each side is capped by the chosen format, so nobody can move into a full team.
Team 1
Team 2
All four seats filled · every human ready · starting…
- Choose your legion at any time before launch. Every person controls their own class selection; the legions guide compares all eight rosters.
- Changing team or legion cancels your ready state. Press Ready up again after making the change.
- Only the host controls bots. The host can add one to any empty seat, remove it, or step its difficulty between easy, normal and hard.
- Bots choose a random legion and count as ready. They let any group size complete a larger lobby.
- Use lobby chat to coordinate. Team formats also expose an All/Team toggle for plans that should remain on one side.
4. Fill every seat and ready up
There is no separate host-only launch button in the normal lobby flow. The server starts the game when two conditions are true:
Every seat is occupied
Humans and bots together must fill both teams for the selected match size.
Every human is ready
Bots are always ready. Each person must confirm their final team and legion.
The lobby status tells the group what remains: empty seats, players who have not readied, or the final “starting” state. Pressing the ready button again cancels readiness if you need another moment.
Once the match loads, each player receives an independent 6×4 board, gold, workers and mythium. Teammates share one King, and leaks from every allied lane converge on that throne. Read the team PvP section before your first 2v2–4v4 if you want the shared-defense and arena rules.
Example: three friends starting a 2v2
Ana creates a private 2v2 and sends the invite link to Bojan and Cora. The lobby has four seats, so the group agrees that Ana and Bojan will face Cora plus a bot. Cora clicks the open Team 2 seat, Ana adds a bot beside her and changes it to Normal, then everyone chooses a legion. Cora changes from Heaven to Arcane after readying, which makes her not ready again. She confirms once more; with four occupied seats and all three humans ready, the match starts automatically.
This setup is intentionally flexible: one friend can host a 1v1 against a bot, two friends can duel or play together against bots, and any group from three to eight can distribute humans across a larger lobby and fill the rest.
What happens if someone leaves?
- Before the matchA guest who leaves frees their seat. If the private host deliberately leaves, the lobby closes for everyone.
- Host refreshAn unexpected host disconnect gets a 60-second grace window. Reopening the same invite while signed into the host account reclaims the lobby.
- During 1v1A disconnected player has the normal 60-second reconnect window; failing to return results in a forfeit.
- During team playAfter the reconnect window, a normal bot takes over the abandoned seat. The player can still return and reclaim control.
For a planned exit before launch, tell the host first so they can decide whether to invite someone else or replace the open seat with a bot.
Private lobby troubleshooting
Lobby not found
Check the six characters, then confirm the host is still inside. A code stops working when its private lobby closes.
Lobby is full
Ask the host to remove an unnecessary bot or recreate the match at a larger size.
The match will not start
Look for an empty seat or a human marked Not ready. Both teams must reach their exact capacity.
Ready status disappeared
Changing your legion or team deliberately cancels ready. Confirm again after the final choice.
Cannot change teams
Click an empty seat on the other side. If none is available, that team has reached the format's limit.
Invite opened at login
That is expected. Sign in with your Throneward account and the game continues to the invited code.
Host checklist
- Choose a format with enough total seats for every friend, allowing any remaining places to become bots.
- Send the full invite link unless someone specifically prefers entering the code.
- Confirm both team columns before adding bots so nobody is locked out of their intended side.
- Set bot difficulty individually and remember that bots receive random legions.
- Wait for final class choices before asking everyone to ready up.
